Lot 311-180-DA-078: Large Vintage Ceramic Wall Plaquette with Madonna Figure – Religious Relief, Europe, 1960s

Preview image

Bidding on this lot has finished

This large-format ceramic wall plaquette depicts a stylized Madonna figure in elongated relief, surrounded by a softly recessed almond-shaped halo. The composition is distinctly vertical and monumental, giving the figure a calm, contemplative presence that reads clearly from a distance. The glazing is subdued and earthy: warm stone-beige tones dominate the background, contrasted by a muted grey-blue robe and a soft ochre-yellow halo. The surface shows intentional speckling and textural variation, characteristic of 1960s European studio or small-workshop religious ceramics, where modernist restraint was applied to traditional devotional imagery. The modeling is simplified yet expressive, with flowing drapery lines and a bowed head that emphasize serenity and introspection rather than ornament. This places the work firmly within the post-war modern sacred art movement, popular in churches, chapels, and refined domestic interiors during the mid-20th century. Although unsigned, the scale, glazing, and stylistic language strongly suggest Western European production, 1960s. Dimensions: Height 47,5 Width 36,5 Thick 2 cm.

Lot 311-181-CH257: Very Rare Early Mid-Century Single Bas van Pelt Brutalist Solid Oak Armchair with Woven Rush Seat for My Home. The Netherlands, 1940s.

Bidding on this lot has finished

A rare and striking armchair by the renowned Dutch designer Bas van Pelt for My Home, crafted in the 1940s in a solid oak with a hand-woven rush seat. It’s bold, robust form and substantial frame exemplify early Dutch modernism with a touch of brutalist strenth: clean, architectural lines combined with a tactile natural seat. Far from fragile, this chair stands as a sculptural yet functional object of enduring presence. Armchairs in oak with rush by Van Pelt/My Home are documented in period and dealer references from the 1930s–40s, like this one, often carrying the My Home mark. The sculptural arms and slightly canted stance reflect Van Pelt’s signature approach: functional rigor married with natural texture, now resonating with today’s interest in brutalist furniture and bold, robust interiors. This piece would perfectly match as a stand-alone item in an interior in style of the designs from Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouve or any other eclectic environment. Pairs beautifully with minimalist, industrial, or modernist interiors. The warm oak and woven rush add both material depth and visual weight, making it a commanding centerpiece without losing elegance. The chair is in a very well preserved condition; strong, clean frame with minor age-consistent wear; rush seat firm and well-presented. Dimensions: Height: 84 cm, Width: 60 cm, Depth: 57 cm, Seat height: 41 cm, Quantity: 1

The Four Seasons' - Set of Four Vietnamese Lacquer Panels with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, Vietnam, 1970s.

This decorative set of four Vietnamese lacquer panels represents the traditional theme of The Four Seasons, a subject frequently depicted in Southeast Asian decorative arts. Each vertical panel portrays a distinct seasonal landscape, characterized by a different tree or plant species and accompanied by animal life.

The compositions feature finely rendered natural scenes, with variations in flora and fauna distinguishing each season. Two panels include butterflies, while the other two depict birds, each rendered with subtle individual differences rather than repetition. These motifs symbolize cyclical change, renewal, and harmony with nature.

Executed in lacquer on wood, the panels are enriched with mother-of-pearl inlay, whose iridescent surface contrasts elegantly with the deep black lacquered ground. Gilt paint accents further enhance the visual richness of the scenes, highlighting branches, foliage, and natural details. The combination of glossy lacquer, shimmering inlay, and gold-toned accents creates a refined decorative effect characteristic of Vietnamese lacquer work from the mid- to late 20th century.

Such sets were often produced for both domestic interiors and export markets during the 1960s–1970s, drawing upon traditional iconography while adapting to contemporary decorative tastes. The panels function equally well as individual decorative elements or as a complete ensemble, emphasizing continuity and seasonal progression. Dimensions each Panel: Height 49 Width 19 cm.

De winnaar (The Victor) – Pieter het Hart, The Netherlands, 1977. Mixed media on board. (probable hardboard panel). Signed and dated lower right: “p t H 77”. Dutch School, 20th century.

This powerful abstract-figurative composition by Pieter het Hart (1925–1987) exemplifies the mature phase of the artist’s development in the 1970s, when his work evolved from darker, figurative expressions toward more liberated, symbolic and abstract constructions.Born in 1925 in IJmuiden into a fishing family, Het Hart developed his artistic practice alongside a technical profession. From the 1950s onward, he pursued formal art education and gradually established himself as a registered BKR artist, educator, and gallery owner in IJmuiden. His oeuvre spans figurative scenes, still lifes, harbour views, and increasingly abstract compositions, marked by a distinctive visual language of strong contours and expressive form.De winnaar presents a dense, symbolic visual field in which fragmented figures emerge through thick, rounded black contour lines. The composition oscillates between abstraction and figuration: animal forms (including equine and canine shapes), anthropomorphic figures, and hybrid creatures appear layered within a dynamic structure. A dominant central figure, positioned atop an elephant-like form, reinforces the thematic suggestion of triumph, power, and symbolic ascension. The chromatic palette is restrained yet expressive: deep blacks structure the composition, while a diffused background of yellowed ground tones is interwoven with green, orange, and brown hues, creating a softened atmospheric field behind the bold linear framework. The painterly surface and material character suggest a mixed-media technique, likely combining oil-based and synthetic binders on a hardboard support, consistent with studio practices of the period.Signed and dated “p t H 77”, the work reflects Het Hart’s mature visual language: rhythmic line work, symbolic figuration, and a narrative abstraction that resists literal interpretation while maintaining strong associative imagery. The composition embodies both personal mythology and broader post-war European abstract-figurative traditions.De winnaar stands as a representative example of post-war Dutch abstract figuration, combining expressive structure, symbolic narrative, and formal autonomy into a visually commanding and conceptually layered work. Dimensions Frame: Height 82 Width 63,5 cm. Visual: Height 80 Width 62 cm.

Large Vintage mirror with Elegant Brass Frame and Faceted Freeform Mirror Glass, 1960s. This elegant mid-century mirror exemplifies the refined decorative design language of the 1960s, combining sculptural form with understated luxury. The mirror features a freeform, softly contoured glass panel with gently faceted edges, set within a slim brass wire frame. The frame is enriched with small spherical brass accents, adding rhythm and a subtle decorative punctuation without overwhelming the clean silhouette. At the top, the delicate double-scroll brass detail introduces a light ornamental flourish that balances modern restraint with a hint of classic elegance. The mirror glass itself has a slightly softened, aged surface, consistent with authentic vintage production, giving it warmth and character rather than the sharp reflectivity of contemporary glass. The overall impression is airy, refined, and highly versatile—equally at home in a mid-century interior, a Parisian-style hallway, or a modern eclectic setting. Decorative yet restrained, this piece -which is in perfect condition- works beautifully as a statement mirror while remaining elegant and easy to place in a wide range of interiors. Tuscany' signed by Dick Nijzink, acrylic on canvas, The Netherlands, 1993. This large-scale painting titled Toscane was created in 1993 by Dutch artist Dick Nijzink. The work presents an abstract interpretation of the Tuscan landscape, immediately recognizable through its rolling hills and the rhythmic presence of cypress trees, a defining motif of the region.

Nijzink employs flowing, gestural lines and harmoniously layered color fields to evoke the undulating terrain of Tuscany. Rather than focusing on literal representation, the artist translates the landscape into a dynamic composition of movement and color. The brushwork is confident and fluid, conveying a sense of light, warmth, and spatial depth through painterly abstraction.

Dick Nijzink is known for his expressive style and vibrant use of color, often working within the boundary between abstraction and landscape. His paintings frequently explore atmosphere and emotional resonance, drawing inspiration from natural environments while maintaining a distinctly personal visual language. His work has been presented through galleries and art rental institutions, reflecting steady recognition within the Dutch contemporary art scene.

The square format and substantial scale of this painting enhance its visual impact, making it a strong statement piece suitable for both private and public interiors. Toscane stands as a representative example of Nijzink’s work from the early 1990s, combining expressive abstraction with a recognizable landscape reference. Dimensions: Height 100,5 Width 100,5 cm.

Street Scene in Quito by Mario Ronquillo, Oil on Canvas, Ecuador, 1970s. This oil painting by Ecuadorian artist Mario Ronquillo depicts an urban street scene believed to be set in Quito, capturing a moment of everyday life within a historic architectural setting. Framed by an arched passageway, the composition opens onto a sunlit street populated by figures moving through a modest neighborhood environment.

Ronquillo employs a loose, confident brushwork, using swift, expressive strokes to suggest figures, buildings, and spatial depth rather than defining them in detail. Light plays a central role in the painting, illuminating façades and streets while contrasting with shaded architectural elements beneath the arch. The clear blue sky and warm tonal palette contribute to a vivid, lively atmosphere.

The work reflects a figurative approach rooted in observation and immediacy, emphasizing daily life and urban rhythm over narrative specificity. Such street scenes are characteristic of mid-20th-century Latin American painting, where artists often combined local subject matter with an accessible, painterly style.

Born in Ecuador in 1943, Mario Ronquillo developed a visual language centered on everyday scenes, urban life, and architectural environments. His work is representative of a broader post-war figurative tradition in Latin American art, valued primarily for its atmosphere, spontaneity, and decorative appeal rather than for conceptual ambition.

This painting stands as a pleasant and approachable example of mid-20th-century Ecuadorian figurative painting, offering insight into daily urban life through a lively and informal painterly execution. Dimensions Frame: Height 51 Width 42 cm. Visual: Height 38 Width 29 cm.

Vibrant Floral Composition with Layered Blossoms and Expressive Brushwork, Oil on Canvas by Unknown Artist, 1960s. This floral still life presents a rich and expressive composition, centered on a bouquet of flowers arranged loosely within the picture plane. The flowers are rendered in a vibrant palette dominated by warm reds, pinks, yellows, and soft whites, contrasted against cooler blues and greens in the background.

The composition feels dynamic rather than static: blossoms overlap and extend outward, creating depth and movement. The painter uses broad, confident brushstrokes, allowing colors to blend organically while retaining enough structure to distinguish individual petals and stems. Rather than focusing on botanical precision, the work emphasizes atmosphere and painterly expression.

The background is treated more freely, with visible brushwork and softened transitions that push the floral arrangement forward. Light appears to be diffused rather than directional, giving the painting an overall luminous quality. Subtle variations in tone and texture create visual rhythm across the surface.

The painting style can be described as expressive and decorative, balancing figurative recognizability with a loose, almost abstract handling of paint. The result is a lively and engaging floral composition that prioritizes color harmony, movement, and visual energy over strict realism. Dimensions Frame: Height 65 Width 85 cm. Visual: Height 47,5 Width 68 cm.

Additional elements, including a ceramic vessel and a whole piece of fruit, possibly a mango or an uncut citrus, are arranged in the background against a serene, restrained setting.

Executed in oil on canvas, the painting reflects the classical European still-life tradition of the early post-war period. The artist demonstrates a confident handling of color and texture, most notably in the contrast between the intense red of the lobster, the cool metallic sheen of the pewter dish, and the soft translucency of the lemon flesh.

The horizontal format enhances the sense of calm and spatial balance, allowing each object to occupy its own visual space without overcrowding the composition. The muted background reinforces the stillness of the scene, drawing attention to the material qualities of the depicted objects rather than to narrative or symbolism.

Although biographical information on R. Viliruvy remains limited, the signed and dated work is firmly anchored in the mid-20th century. The painting should be regarded as a solid and representative example of post-war European still-life painting, notable for its scale, compositional clarity, and classical subject matter.. Dimensions Frame: Height 62,5 Width 113 cm. Visual: Height 50,5 Width 100 cm.

Abstract Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue by Arty Grimm, screenprint (silkscreen), 2004. This screenprint by Arty Grimm
created in 2004 and numbered 179 from an edition of 200, presents a bold abstract composition executed in primary colors. Dominated by red, yellow, and deep blue tones, the work demonstrates a strong sense of balance between color fields, texture, and form.

The composition is structured around layered vertical elements, with dense dark passages contrasting against a luminous yellow ground. At the upper section, two red organic forms introduce visual tension, while the lower portion features textured, circular motifs that add rhythmic variation to the surface. The use of roughened textures and irregular edges gives the print a tactile, expressive quality despite the graphic medium.

Although executed as a screenprint, the work retains a painterly presence through its layered application of color and its emphasis on material surface. The restrained palette and abstract language place the work firmly within contemporary graphic abstraction, where color and form function independently of narrative or representation.

Arty Grimm is known for abstract compositions that explore contrast, structure, and chromatic interaction. His graphic works are appreciated for their strong visual impact and disciplined use of color, making them accessible yet conceptually grounded examples of contemporary printmaking. Reclamation (Ontginning) by M. Bollen, mixed media (airbrush and drawing), Western Europe, late 20th century.
This work, titled Ontginning (Reclamation), depicts a meticulously ordered suburban garden scene rendered with striking technical precision. A rectangular lawn, neatly arranged garden furniture, and a modest garden shed are enclosed by a concrete fence, beyond which tall cornfields and flat agricultural land stretch into the distance.

Executed in a combination of airbrush and fine drawing, the image is smooth, controlled, and highly detailed, lending it an almost photographic clarity. Despite its realism, the scene conveys a sense of unease and emotional distance. The contrast between domestic order and vast cultivated land creates a subtly alienating atmosphere, aligning the work with late-20th-century conceptual realism.
