Description
This large-format ceramic wall plaquette depicts a stylized Madonna figure in elongated relief, surrounded by a softly recessed almond-shaped halo. The composition is distinctly vertical and monumental, giving the figure a calm, contemplative presence that reads clearly from a distance. The glazing is subdued and earthy: warm stone-beige tones dominate the background, contrasted by a muted grey-blue robe and a soft ochre-yellow halo. The surface shows intentional speckling and textural variation, characteristic of 1960s European studio or small-workshop religious ceramics, where modernist restraint was applied to traditional devotional imagery. The modeling is simplified yet expressive, with flowing drapery lines and a bowed head that emphasize serenity and introspection rather than ornament. This places the work firmly within the post-war modern sacred art movement, popular in churches, chapels, and refined domestic interiors during the mid-20th century.
