Lot 311-203-PF013-S3: De winnaar (The Victor) – Pieter het Hart, The Netherlands, 1977.

Preview image

Bidding on this lot has finished

De winnaar (The Victor) – Pieter het Hart, The Netherlands, 1977. Mixed media on board. (probable hardboard panel). Signed and dated lower right: “p t H 77”. Dutch School, 20th century.

This powerful abstract-figurative composition by Pieter het Hart (1925–1987) exemplifies the mature phase of the artist’s development in the 1970s, when his work evolved from darker, figurative expressions toward more liberated, symbolic and abstract constructions.Born in 1925 in IJmuiden into a fishing family, Het Hart developed his artistic practice alongside a technical profession. From the 1950s onward, he pursued formal art education and gradually established himself as a registered BKR artist, educator, and gallery owner in IJmuiden. His oeuvre spans figurative scenes, still lifes, harbour views, and increasingly abstract compositions, marked by a distinctive visual language of strong contours and expressive form.De winnaar presents a dense, symbolic visual field in which fragmented figures emerge through thick, rounded black contour lines. The composition oscillates between abstraction and figuration: animal forms (including equine and canine shapes), anthropomorphic figures, and hybrid creatures appear layered within a dynamic structure. A dominant central figure, positioned atop an elephant-like form, reinforces the thematic suggestion of triumph, power, and symbolic ascension. The chromatic palette is restrained yet expressive: deep blacks structure the composition, while a diffused background of yellowed ground tones is interwoven with green, orange, and brown hues, creating a softened atmospheric field behind the bold linear framework. The painterly surface and material character suggest a mixed-media technique, likely combining oil-based and synthetic binders on a hardboard support, consistent with studio practices of the period.Signed and dated “p t H 77”, the work reflects Het Hart’s mature visual language: rhythmic line work, symbolic figuration, and a narrative abstraction that resists literal interpretation while maintaining strong associative imagery. The composition embodies both personal mythology and broader post-war European abstract-figurative traditions.De winnaar stands as a representative example of post-war Dutch abstract figuration, combining expressive structure, symbolic narrative, and formal autonomy into a visually commanding and conceptually layered work. Dimensions Frame: Height 82 Width 63,5 cm. Visual: Height 80 Width 62 cm.

Domus is internationally regarded as one of the most influential monthly reviews of architecture, interior design, and art, and has played a key role in shaping modern architectural and design discourse. Issues from the 1970s reflect a period of architectural experimentation and cultural transition. Typical content includes contemporary architectural projects, urban and residential design, theoretical essays, interior concepts, and explorations of new materials and construction methods, alongside contributions related to art and visual culture. Each issue is documented with individual cover photography and interior spread images, providing a clear and transparent visual overview of the condition and content of the magazines. Offered as a cohesive set, these original vintage issues are no longer in print and are highly sought after by collectors, architects, designers, and scholars. Large Vintage mirror with Elegant Brass Frame and Faceted Freeform Mirror Glass, 1960s. This elegant mid-century mirror exemplifies the refined decorative design language of the 1960s, combining sculptural form with understated luxury. The mirror features a freeform, softly contoured glass panel with gently faceted edges, set within a slim brass wire frame. The frame is enriched with small spherical brass accents, adding rhythm and a subtle decorative punctuation without overwhelming the clean silhouette. At the top, the delicate double-scroll brass detail introduces a light ornamental flourish that balances modern restraint with a hint of classic elegance. The mirror glass itself has a slightly softened, aged surface, consistent with authentic vintage production, giving it warmth and character rather than the sharp reflectivity of contemporary glass. The overall impression is airy, refined, and highly versatile—equally at home in a mid-century interior, a Parisian-style hallway, or a modern eclectic setting. A graceful and timeless mid-century mirror, combining sculptural brass work with softly faceted freeform glass. Decorative yet restrained, this piece -which is in perfect condition- works beautifully as a statement mirror while remaining elegant and easy to place in a wide range of interiors. Dimensions: Height 72 Width 46 cm.
