Description

Blue Village Scene by W. Scheijgrond, acrylic on board, Netherlands (attributed), mid–late 20th century. This figurative painting, made by W. Scheijgrond, presents a compact, lively village scene rendered predominantly in blue tones and primary colors. The composition is built from a mosaic of small color planes that together form rooftops, modest houses, tiny figures and flowering patches — a hybrid of figurative representation and near-abstract color patchwork. The overall effect is playful and decorative: small human presences and floral accents animate a gently undulating village landscape.

The artist’s handling is confident yet economical: short, directional brushstrokes define texture and surface while a limited chromatic range (dominantly blue with warm highlights) unifies the scene. The scale and composition give the work an intimate, “folk-modern” quality — a mid-century domestic painting that balances narrative suggestion with graphic surface patterning.

No firm biographical record for W. Scheijgrond was available at time of cataloguing; the attribution is therefore presented cautiously. The work should be regarded as a representative example of regional mid-20th-century figurative practice—charming and decorative, suitable for interiors and collectors of mid-century vernacular painting. Dimensions Frame: Height 62 Width 85 cm. Visual: Height 60,5 Width 83,5 cm.
