Striking Fat Lava ceramic wall tile by Ruscha Keramik, produced in West Germany during the 1960s. The tile features a powerful rearing red horse rendered in bold relief against an intense deep azure blue (Azurblau) ground. The surface is finished in Ruscha’s characteristic powdery, lava-textured matte glaze, giving the blue an exceptional depth and velvety saturation. With its substantial thickness and architectural scale, this piece reads unmistakably as a statement wall object rather than decorative wall pottery. The dynamic contrast between the sculptural red horse and the richly textured blue field is a hallmark of Ruscha’s strongest figurative designs. This piece is in excellent condition, no damage observed. Ruscha was one of the leading manufacturers of architectural and sculptural wall ceramics within the West Germany Pottery movement. Their figurative wall tiles—especially animal motifs—are among the most sought-after works from their production, valued for their bold relief, expressive glazing, and strong graphic impact.
