The Four Seasons' - Set of Four Vietnamese Lacquer Panels with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, Vietnam, 1970s.

This decorative set of four Vietnamese lacquer panels represents the traditional theme of The Four Seasons, a subject frequently depicted in Southeast Asian decorative arts. Each vertical panel portrays a distinct seasonal landscape, characterized by a different tree or plant species and accompanied by animal life.

The compositions feature finely rendered natural scenes, with variations in flora and fauna distinguishing each season. Two panels include butterflies, while the other two depict birds, each rendered with subtle individual differences rather than repetition. These motifs symbolize cyclical change, renewal, and harmony with nature.

Executed in lacquer on wood, the panels are enriched with mother-of-pearl inlay, whose iridescent surface contrasts elegantly with the deep black lacquered ground. Gilt paint accents further enhance the visual richness of the scenes, highlighting branches, foliage, and natural details.
